English - Keyboard malfunctioning

  • I use Lubuntu. Few keys of my keyboard stopped suddenly working. I have tried rebooting , reinstalling and nothing helped. Once I was able to to fix the problem with resetting the keyboard shortcuts. However , after the lid off hibernate\sleep. the problem came back. It never happened before Playing around with the Keyboard Tweaks and Keyboard Shortcuts Settings.

IT AFFECTS BIOS AND LEGACY AND GRUB TOO. WHEN I HAVE FIXED THAT WITH RESETTING THE KEYBOARD SHORTCUTS IT HAS FIXED BIOS AND LEGACY AND GRUB TOO.

I HAVE TRIED UPGRADING ALL OF MY DRIVERS.

Funny and Strange things that happen:

*) Another thing that occurs is when I press “number 2 key” or “number 1 key” they don’t work . but When I press escape+num 2+num 1 it prints out a special char. “<”

*) Funny thing is that when keyboard was working good. the caps lock key light was not going on when the Caps Lock was on. Now when I use Onboard and press Caps lock the light goes on but Caps Lock doesn’t work as a key.

Can you please help me to solve the problem?

    Solutions that I have tried:

*) I have tried Windows Troubleshooter. Found none. *) I have tried updating and Uninstall+Reinstalling the PS2 Keyboard Driver. Nothing has changed.

*) I have tried contacting Chickony or Dell, None was succesful. Chickony support is unreachable . Dell community and support depend on Warranty and they don’t really care.

*) I have updated the BIOS. non has changed.

*) I have read about linux kernel and its modules. I have tried modifying some changes and changing to HK locale or others. Installing Chinese support programs. and other input control programs. None helped.

*) I have of course removed and reconnected keyboard from connector. Nothing has changed.

*) I have opened 2 keys individually to see if maybe some dust or other cause. Well there was a really small amount of dust but removing+cleaning didn’t help.

*) I have tried different Operation Systems . No results.

The only solution that once had worked is resetting the Keyboard Shortcuts via PureOS settings it worked like magic until suspend. Nowadays it is not helping.

*) I have tried reinstalling PureOs. none is changed.

*) I have tried removing and reinstalling CMOS battery. It has fixed the bipping on startup. not the keyboard…

*) I am trying to reset the VRAM but I have no Idea how to do that.

*) I have tried battery removing and pressing sleep button for 60secs or more.

The issue began using PureOS , everyone claims that it is an Hardware problem... I am sure it is not because of the facts that I have mentioned above...

  • Das klingt stark nach einem Hardware-Defekt. Zum testen eine andere Tastatur anschließen.

This sounds very much like a hardware defect. Connect another keyboard to test.

  • USB keyboard is not a PS/2 keyboard and I am not able to find a shop that sells PS/2 Keyboard for Laptops,

There are few signs that this is not an Hardware issue,
Like that I was able to fix it with a reset and that combinations with keys that "don't work" do work.
Also the keyboard looks like new.
    It never happened before.
There was a time that it got worse , few more keys stopped working without any explanation.
    Since then nothing changed.
It is not an Hardware issue.

For a long time I have thought that I had an Hardware issue with my Internal Microphone and then I re-installed Windows 10 with updates and drivers and it worked quite well.

Hardware is not always the issue.

  • Have you tested another USB Keyboard? It's not clear to me why you mention the PS/2 Keyboard? Have you tested other Linux Live systems if they behave differently? For me it also sounds more like a hardware problem.

Checking the keyboard on a laptop
is easiest with a USB keyboard.

A PS2 keyboard can only be connected if
the mainboard has a PS2 socket.

What we (can) do here is “remote diagnosis”
    based on the information provided.

In case you haven't noticed: this is a German language forum where I have to translate EVERY piece of information you provide with deepl and my answers in English.

  • To try if the keyboard behaves funny you could put an .iso on a stick and boot into a live system and see whether the keyboard malfunctions there too. If that is the case, it is definitely the hardware, otherwise it might be a system issue (which I don't believe it will be).

I'd suggest LM XFCE or MX Linux for that.

  • Thank you for the help...
Unfortunately I think there is a misunderstanding.
    USB Keyboards do work good.
The ps/2 is the build in connector in my Motherboard.
    I have also USB connections.

I have tested almost 10 different Linux distributions. Non worked.
    Windows also didn't.
Only PureOs once worked after resetting some settings.

Why did the Keyboard (PS/2) had stopped working?

I have tried booting some other Operation Systems via USB. UEFI.
    It didn't help.
I didn't try Linux mint yet.
    I will try Now.

  • This is a long shot: PS/2 is most probably a serial interface. It might clash with the brltty driver that is normally installed to support blind users on a Braille device. I know that causes problems for flashing micro controller via serial interface. Is the brltty package installed and if yes, does the problem go away after un-installation?

I don't know what is britty package and I don't know how to provide the answers.
I have never used a Brill support before..

  • Simply look into your package manager or launch apt search brltty in terminal and look, if it is installed (in case of terminal character i at the beginning of output line of package brltty). If yes remove it with package manager or with sudo apt remove brltty in terminal and test Keyboard again.

  • As @Dietmar91 has already mentioned: If nothing works, then the only possible solution is, that the keyboard is not working properly. Not because of some driver issue but because of a hardware issue.

I don't have any other idea.

I don't have any other idea.

    I would love to agree.
It just doesn't make sense that groups of Keys stop working in a moment, including in BIOS and GRUB and other Operation Systems. After resetting some settings everything works fine, and after a sleep it is back again, and few days later larger amount of keys also stop working and since then no change...
Moreover combination of keys respond but the keys themselves don't.

If it was 1 or 2 keys? fine. but it just a feeling of a user.
I was feeling the same way with my Built-In Microphone.
Finally it is a fact that under Linux it doesn't work but under windows10 it does.

I have removed some "bad" keys and It looks like new.
I have checked the connectors and it was looking like it got out of the factory, Something is fishy.
Many people complain about this issue in Dell Laptops.
Even new users , new computers.

It has to be something systematic.
I am just no so expert and smart to find out what.

  • Ich habe in meiner Arbeitszeit einige Laptop-Tastaturen ausgetauscht.

    Dabei waren auch Dell-Laptop.

In my working time I have done some laptop keyboards during my working hours.

    Dell laptops were also included.

  • Yes sorry, it was only a wild guess.

Well, I still have Linux mint to try. This was my first Linux Distro. It was doing a lot of problem in waking up after Sleep\Lid off. Usually I had to kill the PC by holding power button. It was making a lot of loss to my ongoing jobs.
So I have decided to try different Distros, PureOS was a good one,So I have deleted Windows and Linux Mint, and then it happened. Keyboard problem. I have removed also the grub\efi and Swap partitions.

I had a problem in the beginning to boot , finally I have fixed it.
Could that be an emacs problem?
I have no idea what I am talking about it is just the name of the settings that I was playing with.
It was my first time to use an Xwayland settings so I was playing around with it to learn.

    Funniest thing,
numbers 2 and 1 don't work but combination of ESC+1+2 generates the symbol: "<".

some of the F keys don't work but combinations with Fun and Esc generate other keys and symbols.

    My keyboard is Chickony.
I think that layouts of 104 and 105 are wrong for chickony.
    I am not sure...

    Dietmar what do you suggest?

  • USB keyboard is not a PS/2 keyboard and I am not able to find a shop that sells PS/2 Keyboard for Laptops,

Let's go back to the sentence above for a moment.

I confess - I'm a bit confused. Are we talking about a PC here? Or a laptop?

I used to have PCs with a PS2 keyboard. But this could easily be replaced by a USB keyboard.

That's why the sentence above is a bit confusing. Of course you can replace a PS2 keyboard with a USB keyboard.

However, a laptop usually has a built-in keyboard and not a PS2 keyboard - I only know this from desktop PCs with a PS2 socket.

I (currently) only use Logitech keyboard+mouse combos with a USB dongle.
    dongle.

  • First of all , thanks for helping :)
    Secondly,

    I didn't mean I can not use\connect a USB Keyboard or Mouse, I do.
    I use a laptop Dell 15 3542.
If I connect a USB keyboard it works fine.

I want to fix the problem with PS/.2 Keyboard because it is weird that it doesn't work only few keys.
